CAT 2008: Reading Comprehension Section- Introduction

Lakhs of students would be appearing for CAT (common admission test), premium management entrance examination. One of the most important sections in CAT exam is Reading Comprehension (RC). This comes under verbal section. Majority of students face problems in this complicated section. But then, where there is a will, there is a way.

While preparing for RC, candidates must focus on few basic essentials. The work begins with strengthening one’s power of comprehension. This factor becomes very crucial in the examination because of the fact that, direct questions are not asked in CAT. Questions are based on numerous inferences and candidates must be able to read between the lines to score better in this section. Students are advised to improvise upon their skills because that factor will help in reading and comprehending this language.

CAT papers tend to catch candidates off guard because of their unpredictable format. There is no fixed pattern of questions. Similarly, any topic can be a subject in the RC section. That requires students to be well versed in different subjects. One must be a thorough reader. The best way is to read different newspapers, magazines, journals because all of them carry different style and usage of vocabulary and not to forget diverse topics and jargons. This also helps in diversifying one’s reading habits. Other important factor is to become an active reader. Just reading won’t do. One should be able to read critically, which proves crucial in maintaining better focus and time management.
