The upcoming Indian Institute of Management (IIM) at Rohtak in Haryana is going to be functional this year. Recently, the institute has tied up with US-based Indiana University's Kelley School of Business for the overall growth and development of students and course curriculum. The partnership is more of strategic nature and will involve faculty exchange, joint curriculum designing and research. IIM-R is being mentored by IIM Lucknow (IIM-L). The first semester classes will begin from July or September end. The first batch will have student intake of 140 students. Initially, the classes will be held in Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak. However, the construction of the 170-acre IIM-R campus is going on.

IIM-C has started admissions to IIM Ranchi using CAT 2009 Scores. More than 15000 applications have already thronged to IIM Ranchi where classes will commence from June/July this year. The institute has lowered the cut-offs to encourage reserved category students.

The placement season is going real good for the management students this year. The number of offers has registered substantial increase over previous year and students are being offered multiple choices by the recruiters. IIMs and other top management institutes of the country have expressed their delight and satisfaction at offers being made by the recruiters. The highest offer received by IIM-A has reportedly been around a record Rs 1.44 crore plus package from Deutsche Bank. IIM Lucknow has bagged the highest offer of Rs 75 lakh from Olam International. Some of the top-notch companies have participated in recruitment season this year. This is definitely encouraging news for management students who were feeling despondent just a year ago. Student Exchange Program between IIM-B and Paris-based HEC

In a recent development, IIM (Bangalore) has started a student exchange with Paris-based HEC School of Management. The program will be known as HEC-IIMB (Hiep). According to the schedule, 20 students each from both of the institutes will visit India and France. The group of students will also work jointly on projects of mutual interest. According to IIMB Director Pankaj Chandra, this type of programs will help the institution in becoming a truly international school. The vision is to increase the size of the institute in terms of number of programs. IIMB also has its eyes on becoming a top research school with a consistent focus on India as well as other emerging economies.

According to the program, batch of 14 students of IIM-B will make a visit to France. This will help them in getting familiar with business environment in Europe. It must be noted that earlier students of HEC visited IIM-B and companies like Infosys and Biocon.

7 New IIMs

In our last post, we talked about how new CAT exam format went haywire for a number of reasons. The Common Admission Test (CAT) 2009 for admission to the IIMs and other premier Indian B-schools took place in December 2009. The test was conducted in a new method and that was computer-based test instead of earlier paper exam. The exam period was over eleven day. The appearing candidates had to encounter a number of problems during the exam. Some of the common problems faced by students were, frozen monitor scenes, automatic shutdown of computers during the test and even last minute rescheduling of test slots etc.

Many eligible students couldn’t even take the exams and to handle their situations, IIMs have decided to hold the second phase of CAT exam on January 30 and 31, 2010. Students are hoping that, this time things will be far more efficient.

CAT 2009- ‘Mis’-Management

So after months of preparation and anticipation, CAT 2009 finally took place. Students were eager as well as apprehensive about new exam format. Things did go wrong to some extent. Students had to suffer because of new format and poor execution. There were issues like old CAT questions, cancelled exams, waiting for endless hours, poor handling by invigilators and what not! Many students have complained of getting less time for exam and some other, definitely the luckier ones got extra time. There seemed to have no back-up plan and this severely affected career prospect of many bright students. This was not just a one-off case but found across several centres.

Students have much to complain because of this royal mess done to them. Prior to exam, students were promised user-friendly and flexible exam pattern but things really went haywire. IIM management and Prometric deserve all the flak bestowed to them by media and affected students and their parents. Another bad aspect was inadequate knowledge possessed by incompetent invigilators. They were just not aware of all the rules, procedures and even conduct.

Students and their family members had to wait for endless hours at exam centres. Many places, exams were cancelled and imagine the plight of students coming from far-flung areas. It would be a real disaster for students who could not take exam due to technical glitches. One interesting observation was difficulty level faced by different students. Some founds really easy questions whereas others found it too tough. The stress factor is palpable because of factors like performance, anxiety, targets, expectations and of course exam. Among the sections covered in the CAT, DI (Data Interpretation) is a tricky one. But it is also a high scoring one and chances of improvement are quite high. Preparing Basics

Last post talked about onset of CAT 2009. Let’s try to dwell upon what needs to be done in coming months. One thing that requires urgent attention and is perhaps the most important part is focusing on the basics. How about mathematics? Beginning with old multiplication tables, it would not be a bad idea to learn and practice multiplication tables all over again. This will help in improving speed and we all know how vital speed factor is overall mathematics section. The speed factor often gives you an edge over your other competitors. Good number calculation skills are also helpful in data interpretation section.

Vocabulary section has remained a real pain for lots of students. The prime reason is lack of preparation and planning coupled with wrong perception about VA being the toughest section. But this problem has one easy solution and that is going back to reading habit. Reading has two benefits; one it gives you the sheer joy of reading and second, it enhances your comprehension skills as well. The last basic focus should be on interpreting data. Placement scene at numerous business schools definitely had a different color this time. Blame it on recession or collapse of some of the highest paying financial giants but most of the top colleges witnessed a drop or two in the average salary received. The situation of private enterprises can be summed up one word; cautious. So who takes the cake this year and who hogs the limelight? Well, the good, old Indian PSUs and government banks have provided that much needed support to the final placement at India’s premier colleges. For example, PSU recruited more than 65 students in the just concluded campus placement at IIM Lucknow. If we compare this figure to last few years then that’s definitely a giant leap as far as numbers are concerned.

Indian public sector units (PSUs) and especially ‘Navratnas’ have played a savior act in this year’s placement. Companies like SAIL, BHEL, ONGC, Coal India, SIDBI, NTPC, GAIL, Union Bank of India and Bank of Baroda etc have played a crucial role in selecting bright students from reputed management schools.

Compare the situation with last year when just a handful of PSU visited campus and they too returned empty-handed because of lack of interest shown by students. In one year, everything has changed. Now students are opting for job security than fancy pay packages and glamorous locations. One distinct change was that, very few students even at IIMs, got multiple offers. Few students also opted out of placement to start their own ventures. Overall, things have been better than what was expected.

IIM-B - Placement

This year placement scenario has been less than impressive. Unlike other years, hype normally associated with IIM placement was definitely missing. If we talk about statistics, total 97 companies participated in IIM-Bangalore placement season and all of 250 students got placed. Every year placements taking place at India’s premier institutes IIMs generated lot of hype and hoopla but this time scenario was slightly different and quite.

Because of economic recession and doomed fate of some of the top notch financial giants, placement was expected to be low profile. However, the point of concern was how IIMs would fare. Tier-II colleges were expected to face hard times. The big change witnessed this year was increased participation of public sector enterprises instead of regular private sector giants. Talking about IIM-B placement, it was never a question of how many students will be placed. Rather, the question weighing on everyone’s mind were what will be the average salary offered and how many offered students get.

Unlike previous years, this time participating companies dictated the terms and students also preferred to join an Indian firm in the country rather than going abroad. Last year the number of participating companies was 66 whereas this time the figure notched 97 because of the extra precaution taken by placement committee. Officially, there is no mention of average salary offered but sources reveal it has significantly come down. Investment banks were expectedly absent this time around. Sector wise, 25 percent of the batch landed jobs in consulting firms followed by 29 percent in financial firms and 16 percent in marketing. Overall despite the downturn prevailing all around, things were not that bad.

JMET

The JMET or Joint Management Entrance Test took place on December 14, 2008. JMET is held to select candidates for the post-graduate programmes in management offered by the six IITs (Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Chennai and Roorkee) and IISc Bangalore. Almost 37 across India organized the entrance test examination. JMET is one of the toughest management exams in India. The difficulty level of exam is not surprising considering the fact; one is trying to get into topmost engineering institutes. All the six IITs are crème a la crème. The eligibility criteria was Bachelor's degree in any discipline of Engineering or technology or its equivalent or a Master's degree in any discipline from a recognized Institute or University with at least 60 per cent marks.

JMET is quite different from CAT exam in few matters. If we talk section wise then DI section of JMET is not reasoning based as is the case with CAT which is reasoning as well as calculation based. JMET also place strong emphasis on basics of grammar. Vocabulary and punctuation is also checked thoroughly. JMET involves concepts related to higher mathematics which is not the case with CAT exam. JMAT reserves a complete section for reasoning unlike CAT. CAT exam has more stress on RC section but JMET has relatively easy questions in RCs. Passages are also quite short. JMET 2009 was of three hour duration. Earlier exams were of two year duration. The questions were also reduced in comparison to previous year paper.

GMAT and GRE

GMAT and GRE are two established tests for several courses. On a basic level, GMAT is mostly taken for management-related programme, whereas the GRE has a more diversified and broad portfolio of eight graduate school programmes including, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Psychology, Biology, Literature in English and Mathematics. GMAT is the primary test taken by most of the management aspirants. In GMAT examination, analytical skills, verbal and mathematical abilities are measured. One similarity between both tests is the fact that both tests have been created for native English speakers. In other words, foreigners with English not their main subject are clearly at disadvantage in the verbal segment. GRE is tougher in this aspect whereas GMAT examination can still be better handled by students who do not have English as their first language.

GMAT exam does not test your job skills or subjective qualities or business knowledge. The GRE has a wider scope in context of measuring candidate’s quantitative and verbal skills in abstract thinking. GRE also grinds hard in aspects of writing skills, vocab and general subjects. If one does not have good English and writing skills its better to stay away from GRE and would be much more beneficial to stick to GMAT.

One major difference between these two exams is GMAT candidate need to analyze what has been argued but in GRE candidate has to indulge in arguing. GRE is more abstract whereas GMAT is analytical in one word. Candidates should also take intom mind that even with low GMAT score; he or she can be selected if there is something special about him and his application or academics. Confusion Regarding Verbal section 2009

One of the surprising changes of CAT 2009 entrance examination was extra weight given to verbal section. Actually, CAT 2008 had only 27 questions in the verbal section whereas this year, the number was increased to 40 questions. Out of 40 questions, 20 questions were on comprehension and 20 questions related to English usage and grammar. Now the big worry is verbal questions are traditionally subject to different interpretations whereas quantitative questions have definite answers. The answers will be released by IIMs in early January but students fear the worst in view of extra weight given to English section. The main fear surrounding the aspirants is this factor might cost them their place in next stage of CAT.

The main problem with different interpretations is though answers might be right in eyes of experts but they need not necessarily considered right as per answer keys of IIMs. Different experts had discussion about this aspect and even they did not agree on right answers. This may lead to confusion and students are keeping their fingers crossed for the result. Different institutes like Time, IMS, and Career Launcher etc also released their answers and even they agree that 9 out of 20 questions had different answers. Needless to say these 9 answers can make it or break it for numerous students.

IIMs are not supposed to come up with explanations when they release the answers keys on January 9. This trend is in vogue since CAT 2006. Let’s hope this dilemma is verbal section does not spoil the party for 2,50,000 candidates who appeared for CAT 2009.

B-school Personal Interview

In the previous article we talked about concept of Group Discussion and few suggestions to perform well in GD. The next and final stage is Personal Interview or also called as PI. As mentioned in previous article, CAT examination analyzes your personality on every level. Academic skills were tested in the entrance test whereas GD aimed at gauging one’s people and presentation skills. The purpose of Personal Interview is to analyze personality. Personality aspect includes getting an idea about yourself in your own eyes, knowing your goals and how you relate your personality traits to your goals and vision. Normally the questions raised in PI aims at knowing your true self rather than your academics.

Before going for PI, one must analyze his strengths and weaknesses. It pays big time to figure out in advance about goals and answers of few common questions. These few questions can range from your ambition, about your personal goals, your hobbies, why you want to pursue MBA, aspects like strengths and weakness etc. One should also be prepared to tell about himself and your vision of your coming future. One must not be casual while preparing for personal interview section. After all, you are projecting yourself as a future manager with lots of promises. Also keep in mind, there are no set rules for PI like GD section. It’s a free-flowing interaction session where the panelists manage to dissect your entire mentality and personality.

Group Discussion- Tips

CAT 2008 Examination Analysis

The CAT examination has a tendency of surprising students all these years. CAT 2008 was no exception. This year, total number of questions increased by 20 percent. What caught students’ off-guard was added emphasis on verbal section. That also means, weightage of verbal section was almost 45 percent resulting mainly from 40 percent increases in verbal questions. Students with adequate vocab knowledge and grammatical efficiency must have relished the surprise. RC (Reading comprehension) also had five questions per passage. Last year, it was three questions per passage. That way, verbal section became lengthier but it was also quite manageable. Coming to Quant and DI sections, there were not many surprises except few question patterns based on the previous CAT exams.

Students needed to apply unconventional methods including substitution method and numerous options to answer questions of DI and Quant sections. There were also several question formats and styles quite similar to previous CAT exams and it was also anticipated to some extent. So that must have helped students while handling these questions. DI was definitely tough whereas Quant was manageable for well prepared students.

According to experts, CAT paper was of reasonable complexity level. Because of more choices in English section, paper was also considered balanced. Total number of questions was 90 compared to 75 questions last year. DI and Quant had 25 questions each whereas Verbal section contributed 40 questions. Expected cut-off is 125-128 from IIMs.

CAT Trends

CAT has seen many changes over the years. It used to be a 120 minutes exam prior to 2006. In the mid-nineties, students were supposed to spend equal time on each of the section but 2006 onwards, students were allowed 150 minutes. The prime reason behind that change was increasingly high level of questions and fewer questions. With increased time duration, candidates’ candidates could focus better on difficult questions. That also implied that, speed was no more the most important factor.

With changing time, marks assigned to each question have also changed. The normal rule was assigning equal weightage to each mark whereas some other time, questions carried different marks depending upon their easiness and difficulty level. But since last two year, each question carried four marks. Another significant change was seen in terms of number of choices each question had. Before 2006, each question had four answer choices but since 2006, all the questions carry five choices. This has managed to increase the difficulty level a bit.

IIMs have never revealed about negative marking scheme and cut-off marks. So that makes it difficult to check about these things. But in 2005, negative marking scheme was revealed for the first time. IIMs have followed negative marking scheme; sometimes its one-third for every wrong answer and some other time, 25 per cent of the weight of a correct answer. With CAT paper being done today, students are expected to prepare for all the surprises. Competition is definitely tough with more than 2.5 Lakhs students vying for 1600 seats of IIMs. Wishing all the students good luck.

Changing Pattern of CAT

The much anticipated D-Day is round the corner. The Common Admission Test (CAT) is one of the toughest management entrance examinations in the world but at the same time, it opens a world of wonderful opportunities for the successful candidates. The difficulty level of this exam can be gauged from the fact that only one percent of total appearing candidates manage to get through the prestigious IIMs. CAT is very unpredictable by nature. The reason behind that unpredictability can be credited to the fact that, students need to prepare themselves for encounter surprise situations and changeable business environment.

Students should be prepared to face unpredictability element in form of number of questions, scoring pattern, sections, negative marking, test duration of the test and questions pattern. By the year 2004, the number of questions was reduced even further to 123, 90 in 2005 and 75 in 2006. By changing number of questions, students were made to prepare thoroughly. This also implied that, now onwards, no questions were easy and students couldn’t afford to ignore any particular section. This change also made sure that, candidates would be preparing hard and attempt each question seriously. The implication of such a reduction was that students could no longer afford to leave any area out of their preparation nor could one find 'easy' questions to answer by searching through the paper. A paper with a lower number of questions obviously reduces choice that students have and would play into the hands of those who prepare really well and have left no stone unturned in their quest for excellence.

Data Interpretation: Strategies

Almost all of us read the newspapers and magazines on a daily basis. While going through them, we often come across some data presented in the form of charts, bars, pie-charts and other diagrams. One of the most relevant examples is movement of the sensex of the BSE or NIFTY chart over a period of time. These are often represented by a line diagram. Now, students with regular practice of DI can easily make out the movement of the sensex depicting from the chart. It will almost always easy for him to tell accurately which day of the week saw maximum gain or loss.

In the same way, inflation index or cricket statistics or the rise in price levels are also depicted in chart or diagram format. It will be fun to draw your own consluions based on charts without even looking at the text written below.

Other method could be mental calculations. Whether you are filling up petrol or counting numbers written on the number plates of vehicles or buying vegetables or analyzing price movement of a particular share, one should use mental mathematics and revise percentages and approximations. Candidates with strong interest in cricket can also use that mental mathematics for calculating run rate, over rate or strike rate.

While preparing for Data Interpretations, candidates should also focus on learning square roots and cube roots of numbers upto 10. Then, knowing reciprocals and percentages of numbers upto 20 is also a must. Similarly, one should also be familiar with squares of numbers upto 30 and the cubes of numbers upto 20.

Analytical Reasoning: Strategies

Once students have got the hang of type of questions being asked in DI and Reasoning section, they must devise the proper strategies. Regular practice must be followed by well planned strategies to solve these set of questions. While practicing, students must strive to find the inherent patterns associated with different set of analytical reasoning questions and practice accordingly. Most often than not, more than one method can be used to solve such problems. Understand all these methods are of paramount importance which must be followed by choosing the one that works best for particular candidate.

One also must assure availability of good practice material. Having few good books for practice proves very useful during the actual exam. There are number of well compiled books available with comprehensive range of diagrams and diagrams. One of the recommended books is 'The Great Book of Mind Teasers and Puzzles' by George Summers which is very effective for such preparation. In this book, there are number of puzzles and amazing range of different questions. Few of them are quite easy whereas others are tricky. Books by Shakuntala Devi, the great mathematical wizard, are other useful options.

CAT is as much about strategy as it is about thorough preparation. As exam date is approaching, candidates’ should start thinking about strategy. A strategy should always be flexible enough. There is no point being rigid about your strategy. One should start analyzing oneself critically. Analysis should involve, assessing your areas of strengths, subjects and questions where you always manage to perform well in mock tests. Similarly, your weak subjects should be very clear to you. It also pays to formulate different strategies for different mock tests and check which one works out better. The key is to realize, more you read, better are the chances of coming across new words. It also helps to keep taking vocab test every now and then. - Focusing on learning prefixes, suffixes and roots. Many people will vouch for this technique for its effectiveness. So how does this work?
